Class Shoe Size

October 22, 2014
One of our Math lessons this week was to help students understand the need for a standard unit of measurement.  First 4 students walked heel to toe across the width of our classroom while their classmates counted the number of steps.  They were all different because the length of their shoes were not the same.

To find an average shoe length, 16 students placed one foot onto an adding machine tape.  This was then folded to produce 16 sections. This gave us the average shoe size.  Students will measure items in the room with the Class Shoe Size as we move toward using units such as inches, feet, and yards.

Measuring can be interesting......

What can you measure around your house?????
